Colonoscopy

The colonoscopy is a visual exploration of the lining
of the colon (Intestine Thick).

The Doctor will introduce a flexible tube (colonoscope)
through the rectum. Through this optic probe, the
doctor can see any anomaly.

If necessary, in the course of exploration will take small samples
of tissue (biopsies) and send to analysis, without causing pain.

It is also possible to remove polyps through the endoscope.

 

 

Preparation

 To get a good look, the colon must be completely clean

How is the Exploration?

The doctor, nurse or both will explain the procedure and answer your questions. Let them know if it has been previously subjected to other endoscopic examinations or presents allergies or adverse reactions to drugs.
Report if you are allergic to eggs

You will be asked to sign a sheet that gives its permission for him to practice exploration.

You need to put a jacket and removed the lenses.

You will be placed in a proper and comfortable position; the doctor should be administrating drug through your vein for this relaxed and sleepy.

 

The colonoscope is inserted through the anus and rectum. You may note some abdominal spasms and a certain amount of pressure. This is a normal phenomenon, which soon disappears.

 

The exploration lasts from 20 to 30 minutes.

AFTER STUDY

Remain under observation for some time, while the effects from the medication disappear.
You may note gases, but these effects disappear quickly.
Always must accompany someone to return to home, since sedation might affect your reflexes and the ability to trial.

During the rest of the day is desirable to avoid driving, operating machinery or make decisions. We suggest that rests quietly.

 

Do RISKS?

Colonoscopy can cause complications, such as reactions to drugs, perforation of the bowel and bleeding. These complications are very rare (less than 1 per 10,000 scans), but may require emergency treatment and even an operation.

The risks are slightly higher if colonoscopy is used to implement treatments, such as the removal of polyps.

Do not hesitate to tell if you have intense abdominal pain, depositions colored black tar, or persistent bleeding in the hours or days after the colonoscopy.
